The Royal Academy of Arts has a unique position in being an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education and debate. The Academy hosts an annual Royal Academy summer exhibition of new art, which is a well known event on the London social calendar. Anyone who wishes may submit pictures for inclusion in the summer exhibition and those which are selected are displayed alongside the works of the Academicians. Many of the works are available for purchase. The Royal Academy also hosts a programme of temporary loan exhibitions. These are of the highest quality, comparable to those at the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery and leading art galleries outside the United Kingdom.
